Tolley Hall, Syracuse University

This building was designed in 1889. It has nice little details.

This guy looks very Romanesque~In art history class my friends and I created some mnemonic devices to remember these things. Grotesque Romanesque. And look, I remember it 13 years later! Have I really been out of college that long?

Syracuse Mosaic

Syracuse University has an impressive amount of art on campus. Here is the one that grabbed my attention the most.

Bonus points to anyone who can tell me more about the artist/artwork here, or any of the artworks all over Syracuse's campus. Our tour guide gave me a very general answer. I was less than impressed.

More Syracuse University

Very Classic: Nice red brick with Corinthian Columns. The frieze is a bit boring, but I like the eagle's feathers and his little legs sticking out of his "feather bellbottoms."

Variety of Old and New

Syracuse University has quite a combination of old and new buildings. Their oldest buildings are all in the center of campus and then the surrounding buildings are from all different decades with the newest building being LEED Certified.

Land Architecture

I think Maya Lin is amazing. This article and video from the New York Times actually started my greater appreciation for her work. Then going to see her smaller sculptures in the museum building at Storm King Art Center made me LOVE her work. These images are of her large scale Wavefield which is at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY. Now I want to go to Michigan and California to see her other two related works.

This is just a collection of some fun pictures I have taken over the years.

Mountain Retreat

It's an interesting hotel and it really speaks of a time when travel took longer, so this is really an "old money" resort for people from New York City before flights to Europe were easily accessible. The hiking, nature, and gardens really are the highlights, but the Mountain House is very nice too. Here you have the area by the water that looks like a log cabin and the rest of the hotel looks like the Victorian Castle that it is, with two distinct sides. The right side of the resort looks older and the left looks like it was built later.

Looking out

I don't usually like iron work unless it's artfully done. I don't think this pattern is especially aesthetically pleasing, but it caught my eye nonetheless. I think the silhouette against the great natural light helps.

Interior View: Duct Work

Another architectural view of the mall.

Interior View: Elevators

I never thought I would be visually interested in an elevator because they usually gross me out. The lines and colors in the back of this one caught my attention however.

Interior View: Light

The light is really what caught my attention in this composition, which is not an architectural element. But the windows are, and notice the lights...they are permanent fixtures and they look quite a bit like construction lights. It's amazing that many companies spend a lot of money on light fixtures, and these are so simple and probably much cheaper.

Interior View: Mall

This is a mall that I do not find especially aesthetically pleasing, but it is much more interesting in photographs.
